Use of GNSS SNR data to retrieve soil moisture and vegetation variables over a wheat crop

چکیده
This work aims to estimate soil moisture and vegetation characteristics from Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) data using direct and reflected signals by the land surface surrounding a ground-based antenna. Observations are collected over a rainfed wheat field in southwestern France. The retrievals are compared with two independent reference datasets: in situ observations of soil moisture and vegetation height, and numerical simulations from 15 the ISBA (Interactions between Soil, Biosphere and Atmosphere) land surface model. Results show that changes in soil moisture mainly affect the multipath phase of the SNR data (assuming the relative antenna height is constant) with little change in the dominant period of the SNR data. Changes in vegetation height are more likely to modulate the SNR dominant period derived from a wavelet analysis. Surface volumetric soil moisture can be estimated (R = 0.73, RMSE = 0.014 mm) when the wheat is smaller than 20 cm. The quality of the estimates markedly decreases when the vegetation height increases. 20 This is because the GNSS signal is less affected by the soil contribution. A wavelet analysis provides an accurate estimation of the wheat crop height (R = 0.98, RMSE = 6.2 cm). The latter correlates with modeled above-ground biomass of the wheat from stem elongation to ripening. It is found that the vegetation retrievals are sensitive to changes in plant height of at least one wavelength. A simple smoothing of the retrieved plant height allows an excellent matching to in situ observations, and to modeled above-ground biomass. 25

Interactive comment on “Use of GNSS SNR data to retrieve soil moisture and vegetation variables
This paper presents a case study applying GNSS signals, which were reflected on the ground surface (soil, vegetation surface) to derive soil moisture and vegetation height data over a wheat crop field. The GPS antenna was installed at a height of 2.51 m. Soil moisture was retrieved as long as the vegetation height was lower than ∼20 cm. However, with a further increase in plant height, it was n...
متن کاملRetrieving soil moisture and agricultural variables by microwave radiometry using neural networks
Two neural network algorithms trained by a physical vegetation model are used to retrieve soil moisture and vegetation variables of wheat canopies during the whole crop cycle. The first algorithm retrieves soil moisture using L band, two polarizations and multiangular radiometric data, for each single date of radiometric acquisition. The algorithm includes roughness and vegetation effects, but ...
متن کاملEvaluation of Simplified Polarimetric Decomposition for Soil Moisture Retrieval over Vegetated Agricultural Fields
This paper investigates a simplified polarimetric decomposition for soil moisture retrieval over agricultural fields. In order to overcome the coherent superposition of the backscattering contributions from vegetation and underlying soils, a simplification of an existing polarimetric decomposition is proposed in this study. It aims to retrieve the soil moisture by using only the surface scatter...

The present paper proposes a method for the evaluation of soil evaporation, using soil moisture estimations based on radar satellite measurements. We present firstly an approach for the estimation and monitoring of soil moisture in a semi-arid region in North Africa, using ENVISAT ASAR images, over two types of vegetation covers. The first mapping process is dedicated solely to the monitoring o...

Compared with the backscattering configuration, the bistatic scattering echoes can provide multidimensional information on land surface. Based on the Michigan Microwave Canopy Scattering (MIMICS) model, a first-order microwave bistatic scattering model for vegetations is developed in this paper. The dominant scattering mechanism for wheat and soybean in the L and C bands is analyzed by simulati...
